Lies and Deceit
The move Food inc. reveals the lies that the food industry has been telling the masses for years. Companies lie like no other, not many people question them but when they do it usually does nothing because they have so much power. We need documentaries like these to expose the evil and horrible things industries do. But still more must be done, Food Inc. has turned many people off buying these meat products but the companies aren’t changing their ways. At the same time that these companies lie, the film makers can be very tricky and add in their own lies which to strengthen the effect of their message and are usually believed as they are perceived to be the good guys. This just goes to show that you should always think about what you hear and see and to not trust everyone.

Violence
Violence is a theme that is extremely prevalent in todays media, especially movies. I started to think about if I have become desensitized to violence and horrific things in general. My question was answered when I saw real life violence on the news which disturbed me much more than any bloody massacre in a movie. Although I had not been changed by these movies, I wondered if anyone or everyone else has been. If a person were to watch violent movies through there childhood would they become someone with no negative reaction or even a positive reaction to violence? With so much drugs, sex, and violence we see in movies today, one may wonder if it is having a negative effect on the poeple watching it. Even if one consciously thinks that it doesn’t, it may have changed them subconciously. Why do we enjoy seeing these things? Are we turning in to a population of brutal people with no sensitivity to violence, or are we smart enough to know the difference between real and fake? Either way i’ll never stop watching my favorite movies no matter how much violence.

Expression can come in many forms. In writing, in singing, in dancing, and in movies. Through movies one can express themselves in the greatest detail, harnessing the opportunity to show every part of oneselves through different characters. Each character may represent one emotion or side of the writer, and countless symbols may be placed throughout the movie. Through film, one can express their opinions in dramatic or subtle ways, or convay messages to the masses. Many movies have hidden or subtle messages that have been put in by the creator to make people think deeper in to the movie and take away what the creator wanted them to. Much like musicians, there are countless different types of movies, anywhere from happy family films, to horrific torture films, and everywhere in between. This wide range of genres allow endless possibilities for expression. I believe a movie can be one of the most powerful and thought provoking forms of expression there is.

Nacho Libre is possibly one of my favorite films ever, I have seen it countless times and know every word. The story is of a priest in mexico who has a passion for wrestling. He takes on a secret persona as Nacho, as it is forbidden for a holy man to fight, becomes a luchador. Nacho disgraces himself and the church when his identity is revealed, but he redeems himself by winning the orphans the church takes care of a big school bus and 10,000 pesos.  Redemption is a great thing, it causes people to do extrordinary acts of kindness and compassion, however there is no good without there being bad first. I believe that one can redeem themself after doing bad things only by doing something so great that it makes up for every bad thing they have ever done. I don’t think saving someones life redeems a murderer, that person would have to bring that person back to life to achieve redemption. This movie could be called bad; the acting is not flawless, there are no special effects, and many characters lack depth, however, it is heartwarming, hilarious, spontaneous, and all around entertaining. These redeeming qualities make something that could be called bad, into something very good. The same can be applied to any person that has made a few mistakes but makes up for them with greater actions.

In the movie “I Am Legend,” Will Smith sacrifices his family, everyone hes ever known, and his own life to save the city of New York from an outbreak of a terrible virus. The sacrifice one man made saved the entire world, although this sounds too good to be true i believe it could be a very real possibility. Bill Gates is currently worth 50 billion dollars, if he were to spread this money to the people around the world living in poverty he could save millions. But we as human beings seem to be born selfish and unwilling to give things up that we don’t need, for example, most people couldn’t be bothered to give the change from their pocket to a charity which could very well save a life. But there is another question, is sacrificing one persons life to save many more justified? This topic is widely argued and many people have different opinions on it. I for one believe that it is justified, however, I could never imagine sacrificing a loved one even if it meant saving millions. Sacrifice can never be justified to everyone, but is many times neccessary to create a better world.

2001: A Space Odyssey
The most recent movie i have seen is 2001: A Space Odyssey. This movie may be the most interesting and thought provoking movie i have ever seen. The movie is heavy loaded with symbolism having to do with mans evolution, religion, and the life cycle. The most prominent message in the movie was that man has reached a point in evolution where he is becoming too dependant andlosing control of his tools. In the movie we first see prehistoric apes living simple lives until one starts to use a bone as a tool for killing. Fast forward 4 million years and man is on his way to jupiter in a ship controlled by artificial intelligence seemingly identical to a human. However, the computer turns on its creator forcing man to destroy what he has worked 4 million years on. Trapped in space, man is useless and ventures further into the unknown to his death. Has man reached the pinnacle of his evolution, or have we come to a point where we are so reliant on our creations that we’re going in the wrong direction?
